Tripitaka, the sacred norms of Buddhism has been declared a national heritage at the ceremony held at the same venue, Matale Aluvihare, where the Tripitaka was first scripted.
The ceremony was held on 05th January 2018 in the presence of President Maithripala Sirisena.
The Tripitaka ,the essence of Buddhism, the oral teachings of Buddha had composed into a written form by a monk during the rein of King Valagamba foreseeing the possible treat to the Buddhism. The content of Tripitaka is collection of three divisions; Vinaya pitaka (Discipline), Suthra Pitaka (discourse), Abhidharma (deepest of dharma).
In 1955, marking the 2500 years of Buddha Jayanthi (Birth of Buddha) the government initiated translating the Tripitaka into Sinhala.
Currently, Tripitaka is translated into many languages and brought its essence to many countries.
