State Minister Ajith Nivard Cabraal stated in Parliament   (05) that in the future, more focus will be given to the importation of electric and hybrid vehicles.

The State Minister said that attention has already been given to the assembly of vehicles, especially the production of tires and seats locally, and that steps are being taken to attract investment to the country.

Importation of vehicles into the country during the last few years are as follows.

2015 – 647444 Vehicles

2016- 469304 vehicles

2017 – 460201 Vehicles

2018 – 494488 Vehicles

2019 – 344059 Vehicles

Accordingly, vehicles worth Rs.123,900 million have been imported to the country during the five years from 2015 to 2019.

Although the government has halted the import of vehicles due to the Covid-19 epidemic, the State Minister said that this situation would be changed in the future after further
consideration.
