On October 2019, veterinarians, Dr. Malaka Abeywardena and Dr. Manoj Akalanka, spotted the long-thought to be extinct black leopard in the Central Hills. According to the Department of Wildlife Conservation, they did not announce the existence of the species until they confirmed the footages from a location inside a forest reserve. The Sri Lankan Black Leopard has a unique color mutation and out of the eight species of panthers living in the world, the sub-species, Sri Lankan Leopard is extraordinary due to its limited population.
Additionally, they also announced the discovery of a black leopard family consisting of a male, female, and two cubs.
